About SWT
Formally called Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy, SWT is not a new, untested treatment:
- It was born in the 1980’s out of lithotripsy, the use of acoustic waves to break kidney stones
- Doctors noted soft tissue healing and bone density increasing after lithotripsy treatments
- In the 1990’s, SWT began to be used on musculoskeletal injuries with amazing results
- SWT is non-invasive and extremely effective; eliminating the risks, downtime, and costs associated with surgery

Mechanism of action
The energy delivered to an injury by SWT has numerous biological effects on bones, tendons and other soft tissue.

Treatment
OrthoWave, OsteoWave and CorporaWave SWT treatments are non-invasive and completed in office.
- Protocol and treatments vary based on the injury but a session typically lasts 20 to 45 min
- You are positioned in the exam chair, ultrasound gel applied, and the SWT treatment head placed precisely against the injury site.
- 3000 to 4000 shock waves are delivered at a specific frequency/energy level while ensuring your comfort.
- Post treatment instructions are provided and you are able to leave immediately.
Recovery
SWT is completely non-invasive so there is no lengthy recovery period, time off from work, nor risk of complications like invasive surgery.
- Generally, high-impact activities need to be avoided for 30 days
- Braces, boots, slings, crutches, etc, are not required
- Most patients see a significant decrease in pain and increase in function immediately
- Greatest improvement realized over first 30 days but healing continues for several months
- Waiting 30 days is often hardest part as the injury quickly feels good for the first time in a long time…just give it some time to fully heal

High-energy Shockwave Therapy is a non-invasive treatment that uses focused, high energy acoustic waves to treat numerous musculoskeletal injuries. It is a proven, safe, and highly effective alternative to surgery for chronic overuse injuries after conservative treatments have failed as well as mild to severe osteoarthritis.
High-energy Shockwave Therapy is a highly effective, non-invasive alternative to surgery for chronic overuse injuries, arthritis and other musculoskeletal injuries after conservative treatments have failed. Common injuries include plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendonitis, patellar tendonitis, and tennis elbow.
High-energy Shockwave Therapy has been proven in numerous Level 1 studies (Randomized Control Trials) to be highly effective, with success rates as high as 93%. In studies that compared High-energy Shockwave Therapy to surgery, non-invasive Shockwave Therapy proved to be more effective and without the risks associated with surgery.
Most injuries only require a single session of High-energy Shockwave Therapy. Everyone is different, but a majority of patients have a significant reduction in pain immediately after their treatment that continues to improve over the next 30 days as their injury heals. Patients then ease back into high-impact activities and fully recover after a month or two. Because the injury heals, additional treatments are not needed unless the area is reinjured.
No serious or long-term side effects have been observed in over 30 years of use and research of High-energy Shockwave Therapy. Short term side effects include redness, swelling, and/or tingling at the treatment site that normally resolves within a few days. Unlike surgery, there is no risk of making the injury worse with Shockwave Therapy.
High-energy Shockwave Therapy costs less than half the average deductible for surgery. Shockwave Therapy and ultrasound are very different. FDA approved Shockwave Therapy can only be prescribed by a licensed medical doctor. Ultrasound uses high frequency acoustic waves to deliver heat to an injury and stimulate blood flow.
